"Lovely staff and drinks but food was just okay. Everything on that we got sounded good but it wasn’t executed well. Steak was flavourless & over cooked. Cabbage was greasy and potatoes were nothing exceptional like what you would cook at home. Food came out far too quick also"

"This is the best bowl of vegan phở I have tried! I ordered the spicy tofu & mushroom bowl. Excellent spicy and herby flavour with perfect noodles. I've heard good things about the non-vegan dishes, too. The restaurant has a lovely, quiet vibe and the staff are really exceptional - attentive, welcoming and friendly. Would recommend to anyone looking for tasty, Vietnamese style food!"

"While the dining room is gorgeous, the food was just okay and the overall experience lacking. Service was fine, although I did get the wrong wine at first (ordered a shiraz riesling and was given a glass of white riesling). Beef tartare was fine, although served on a crostini on a glass plate which made it incredibly loud when cutting into. Quite chewy beef, not exactly melt in the mouth, and the caviar I felt didn't add anything to the dish. Not the best cut of venison either, for the price you would expect the absolute best. My friend's lobster bisque was beautiful, but lacking in amount of lobster. The music playing we felt was incredibly tacky, Harry Potter theme music and then Jurassic Park. For such an atmospheric dining room we were expecting maybe some classical music or moody jazz, instead we got what felt like a tourist tat shop playlist. All in all, it was just okay."

"I visited with my partner in March 2026 and had an absurdly good time. The restaurant is very conveniently located just off of the Royal Mile. We booked a table and arrived early, so were guided to the bar to wait for our table to be ready. The restaurant was packed and someone who hadn't booked was turned away as we waited, so definitely book in advance. The energy and atmosphere in the restaurant was busy but controlled - everyone was having a good time, the staff were working extremely hard, and it was lovely. The music wasn't too loud, the lighting wasn't too bright, it was really pleasant. The prices were level with other local restaurants - slightly more expensive than I'd normally go for, but very reasonable for the area. The food was...just absurdly, astonishingly good. The bruschetta was amazing, the pizzas were beyond delicious, the raspberry sorbet was to die for. We were absolutely stuffed, but it was so worth it! Our server (Sam) was extremely conscientious and on top of things, and we never felt like we were waiting around. He is an asset to the restaurant. Overall, we had an excellent time and desperately want to return!"

"1-Star Review: Extremely Disappointing Experience – Poor Service & Tasteless Food I spent 7 wonderful days in Edinburgh exploring various local and international restaurants – Chinese, Indian, Japanese, McDonald’s, Nando’s, Wagamama, and many more. Sadly, my last meal of the trip turned out to be the worst experience of all. My family was looking for a vegetarian option and came across Hong Fu Noodle Bar and Restaurant. We entered and were told the restaurant was upstairs. Before dining, we asked to use the restroom to wash our hands. The staff told us it was downstairs – only for customers – then changed the answer seconds later saying food and toilets are both upstairs. This inconsistency was confusing and unwelcoming. Despite the restaurant being large, it was completely empty – which in hindsight, made sense. We were a group of 4 but chose to order just one dish initially to check the taste. From that moment, we felt unwelcome. The staff member, Jassice, made a comment to her colleague in Chinese while giving us a negative look and body language. It was clear we were being judged for ordering only one dish. While waiting, the children were quietly playing with chopsticks (as commonly done in many Asian cultures). Instead of handling it kindly, Jassice pointed her finger to her lips and sternly signaled the child to be quiet, leaving the child confused and upset. When I asked why, she said they were making noise and might break the chopsticks. Things got worse. While I was still reading the menu, she suddenly snatched it from my hand without asking. When I asked why, she replied, “They will get sticky and oily because your food is here.” I explained I was not eating yet and still reading. Her tone and approach were unnecessarily rude. When the food finally arrived, it was completely tasteless. We were relieved we hadn’t ordered more. This was not just bad service – it was disrespectful, unprofessional, and unnecessarily rude. The entire experience left a bitter end to an otherwise great trip. 📌 My recommendation: Avoid this restaurant completely. If the owner is not aware of this, I suggest reviewing the CCTV footage for staff behavior. This is a genuine review, and I will attach the receipt as proof of visit. 👎 Worst food and worst customer service in Edinburgh."

"A good, straightforward local restaurant. Well presented, tasty food. Friendly, chatty staff. Not expensive so can be a regular place to visit. Fun, friendly staff. It can get a bit noisy when busy. Good value."

"At 2:20 or so I got a burrito with a new tray of coriander rice taken out the warm cupboard. But the whole thing was like warm / cold - I ate it immediately in the shop. Worse, and it’s the only thing I’d eaten that was different to meals shared with family, I had a terrible case of food poisoning overnight. It might or might not have anything to do with this food, but like warm rice isn’t with the risk. Service was of the mumbling miserable variety. They all sounded and looked like they didn’t want to be there - so it’s no surprise that temperatures and maybe storage are off."

"Absolutely outstanding ….. from start to finish, from service to food this establishment delivers an exceptional experience, quite frankly with food that is worthy of a Michelin recommendation. The cullen skink was absolutely superb available in both starter and main course sizes, the haddock was wonderfully smoked and the creamy broth was stunning. Followed by the hake, with another wonderfully rich sauce, cut through by the lovely poached rhubarb, these dishes were culinery works of art with deep and rich flavours cooked to perfection. We both went in for desserts and the vanilla parfait stood out although all of the menu items sounded delicious. This dessert was in my mind one of the best I have ever experienced. The use of tarragon in the white chocolate cream with the beautiful parfait was a revelation and elevated this from being a lovely dessert to something really special. Jen our server was chatty and happy to spend time with us without being over attentive. Timings were excellent, no slow service here yet not rushed as well. Overall one of the best dining experiences we have had in a while I would say, and certainly up there with places that charge a lot more and have stars against their name. Thank you all at The Magnum we will be back!!"
