1-Star Review: Extremely Disappointing Experience – Poor Service & Tasteless Food I spent 7 wonderful days in Edinburgh exploring various local and international restaurants – Chinese, Indian, Japanese, McDonald’s, Nando’s, Wagamama, and many more. Sadly, my last meal of the trip turned out to be the worst experience of all. My family was looking for a vegetarian option and came across Hong Fu Noodle Bar and Restaurant. We entered and were told the restaurant was upstairs. Before dining, we asked to use the restroom to wash our hands. The staff told us it was downstairs – only for customers – then changed the answer seconds later saying food and toilets are both upstairs. This inconsistency was confusing and unwelcoming. Despite the restaurant being large, it was completely empty – which in hindsight, made sense. We were a group of 4 but chose to order just one dish initially to check the taste. From that moment, we felt unwelcome. The staff member, Jassice, made a comment to her colleague in Chinese while giving us a negative look and body language. It was clear we were being judged for ordering only one dish. While waiting, the children were quietly playing with chopsticks (as commonly done in many Asian cultures). Instead of handling it kindly, Jassice pointed her finger to her lips and sternly signaled the child to be quiet, leaving the child confused and upset. When I asked why, she said they were making noise and might break the chopsticks. Things got worse. While I was still reading the menu, she suddenly snatched it from my hand without asking. When I asked why, she replied, “They will get sticky and oily because your food is here.” I explained I was not eating yet and still reading. Her tone and approach were unnecessarily rude. When the food finally arrived, it was completely tasteless. We were relieved we hadn’t ordered more. This was not just bad service – it was disrespectful, unprofessional, and unnecessarily rude. The entire experience left a bitter end to an otherwise great trip. 📌 My recommendation: Avoid this restaurant completely. If the owner is not aware of this, I suggest reviewing the CCTV footage for staff behavior. This is a genuine review, and I will attach the receipt as proof of visit. 👎 Worst food and worst customer service in Edinburgh.
A good, straightforward local restaurant. Well presented, tasty food. Friendly, chatty staff. Not expensive so can be a regular place to visit. Fun, friendly staff. It can get a bit noisy when busy. Good value.
All good at the ‘Beefbar’, except for the fact that my guest were not allowed through to the Beefbar as they were informed it was not open, yet we were sitting in the Beefbar waiting for them??? Also the music was too loud and the pianist’s jazz form was poor.
5 star to Hubert. Amazing service. Arrived for my 30th bday and recieved complimentary drinks. Lovely recommended cocktails. Ordered the full seafood platter. Yum! Also some small platters = yum! Left nice and full and tipsy. Bill was as expected for a fresh sea food experience. Music on point had a little giggle as I was digging into to my selfish.
A great family place with soft ambient music and an incredibly friendly staff, recommended if you want to feel close to greece.
A very nice place. I especially recommend the haggis tower, surprisingly good sauce, barely noticeable whiskey. A very atmospheric place, with live music every night. You'll definitely enjoy it.
Unfortunately we got seated near bar all I could smell was dirty bins .staff were bustling around the area it was very noisy . Meal was good but could of been hotter in temperature ... A bit disappointing..
10 of us went for for dinner between colleagues. The food was very average as well as the service and the room amazingly noisy. Definitely not worth the price.
A French bistro that packs in the diners each time we enjoy a meal in this narrow storefront restaurant where you are best with a reservation. The grilled salmon and beef bourguignon are consistent favorites. The restaurant is typically packed and that raises the noise level. We keep returning.
1st time here. Amazing place food was fablous as was the service. So fresh & well present Staff were excellent always on hand. Wasn't rushed & it was very relaxing. The music is not really loud, just the background. Worth a look & so worth money. Would I recommend definitely.
2nd lunch here this year, with a different menu, both experiences have been amazing. I didn't think you could dine Michelin ⭐️ at this price. The staff are friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable. The food is a taste sensation - truly clever, thoughtful chefs designing it. 3 courses but with tasty extras mean you finish pleasantly full, having had an unhurried dining experience. Shout out for Irma and Amy who's chat and service mean I'll be back. Lovely surroundings with no background music so you can enjoy the company of your dining companions
A delightful Gastro Pub in a quiet corner of Edinburgh this place was a delight to go to . Wonderful service and atmosphere with a delicious menu to back it up. From presentation to the quality of the meals, everything was perfect for an intimate dinner for 2.

Walked in to the service area to be seated. Was asked if we would like just drinks or food. We replied food sounds good as well. To which the waiter replied foods closed. Not sure why you asked then but whatever. We decide to stay for drinks. He seats us. Brings us a water. We then dont see him again for somewhere around 15-20 minutes. Got up and walked out.

While the dining room is gorgeous, the food was just okay and the overall experience lacking. Service was fine, although I did get the wrong wine at first (ordered a shiraz riesling and was given a glass of white riesling). Beef tartare was fine, although served on a crostini on a glass plate which made it incredibly loud when cutting into. Quite chewy beef, not exactly melt in the mouth, and the caviar I felt didn't add anything to the dish. Not the best cut of venison either, for the price you would expect the absolute best. My friend's lobster bisque was beautiful, but lacking in amount of lobster. The music playing we felt was incredibly tacky, Harry Potter theme music and then Jurassic Park. For such an atmospheric dining room we were expecting maybe some classical music or moody jazz, instead we got what felt like a tourist tat shop playlist. All in all, it was just okay.

I visited with my partner in March 2026 and had an absurdly good time. The restaurant is very conveniently located just off of the Royal Mile. We booked a table and arrived early, so were guided to the bar to wait for our table to be ready. The restaurant was packed and someone who hadn't booked was turned away as we waited, so definitely book in advance. The energy and atmosphere in the restaurant was busy but controlled - everyone was having a good time, the staff were working extremely hard, and it was lovely. The music wasn't too loud, the lighting wasn't too bright, it was really pleasant. The prices were level with other local restaurants - slightly more expensive than I'd normally go for, but very reasonable for the area. The food was...just absurdly, astonishingly good. The bruschetta was amazing, the pizzas were beyond delicious, the raspberry sorbet was to die for. We were absolutely stuffed, but it was so worth it! Our server (Sam) was extremely conscientious and on top of things, and we never felt like we were waiting around. He is an asset to the restaurant. Overall, we had an excellent time and desperately want to return!
