3 tacos, moderate diarrhea. Terrible place to eat, lots of loud music.
A lot of the dishes felt catered to what I saw in there, which was primarily white folk. It didn’t taste like authentic Peruvian dishes, not that it had to be but a lot of it lacked flavor or depth. Not to mention the prices of the dishes don’t reflect the food at all. Very expensive, super long wait times, and extremely loud. Already a crowded small restaurant with music super loud, maybe it was my fault to bring my family there but if there’s way to make the environment less intense than it already is that would be great. Service was phenomenal, but waiting over an hour half for a pushed corner table for what I got was not even remotely worth it. Super disappointed.
All vegan here. Good place to stay for the concert across Davies Symphony Hall. Vibrant and cozy atmosphere. So it’s not a very quiet place. But it’s a relaxing place to work alone or spend time with friends. Free WiFi. Scan QR code to order. So many varieties to choose from Salads, drinks, breakfast, brunch… The green juice is fresh.
Sometimes I travel so I can immerse myself in the local cuisines and traditions. And other times I find local restaurants that remind me of those odysseys. My first pilgrimage to Cantoo Latin Asian Rotisserie let me wander and explore two cuisines and countries at the same time - Venezuela and China. I can hardly wait to go back. I stopped off on my way to see Richard Thompson at the Fillmore. The menu is pretty extensive and there are so many different soups, appetizers, rotisserie chickens, B.B.Q. pork ribs dishes and clay pots. The list and unique combinations were endless and a bit overwhelming. I ordered a Empanada con Carne Mechada: Deep fried corn flour empanada with Venezuelan shredded beef. and Chili Oil Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings: Home made pork dumplings! Made from scratch, starting from grinding the meat, to seasoning the filling of the dumplings. Both were so good. The Empanada had flavors of sweet corn filled with a rich shredded beef. The Pork Dumplings were fresh and tasty. The chili oil gives the dumpling's the right amount of heat and made my tongue sing. Service was so kind, friendly and efficient. I know I just scratched the surface of this gem. While located in the Tenderloin, the street is alive with people and automobiles. I felt completely safe. Matt says if you are anywhere near O'Farrell St - maybe near Union Square or on your way to the Great American Music Hall, take a Lyft or the 38 (R) Muni and let yourself travel to China and Venezuela and explore the amazing and creative foods of those countries.
1601 Bay & Kitchen is a hidden gem among so many over rated restaurants in SF. We spent most of our Saturday night here enjoying the chef's tasting menu which featured modern twists on classic Sri Lankan flavors. The duck leg curry was the star of the menu, but we enjoyed everything from the savory uni ice cream to the traditional egg hopper. At 110pp, it's also probably one of the best value tasting menus I've had in a while. The wine pairing felt like a bit of a miss at times, but I appreciated the variety including beer & sake with some of the courses. The restaurant was quiet, service was never rushed, and we enjoyed the opportunity to talk with the chef and owner throughout the evening.
6/2/25 Second Review: Went to Golden Era for another work lunch to celebrate a coworker's birthday at his request, since it is his favorite restaurant in the area. We split two dishes - the lemongrass "chicken" and the papaya salad. Although I have had the lemongrass chicken dish before, it was as delicious as I remembered. Whatever they use as the chicken substitute is always fried to perfection and soaks up the flavor of the sauce beautifully. As a huge fan of som tam, I was also very excited to try the papaya salad. The papaya salad was also very delicious and was topped with some sort of beef substitute that was also very delicious. The papaya salad wasn't as spicy or laden with peanuts as I'm used to from the Thai version, but it was very tasty nonetheless. If you are looking for healthy and tasty options in the downtown or TL area, check out Golden Era! It has tasty options for anyone that likes Asian food, not just vegans. Original review: We loved Golden Era! I work in the TL nearby and went here with a coworker after he recommended it, and was delighted to see a healthy option with tons of interesting and delicious sounding dishes nearby. We got the Lemongrass "Chicken" Deluxe and the Fried Cauliflower, with a side of white rice. The Fried Cauliflower had a really nice thin, almost tempura like batter, giving it a perfect crispiness without being super oily or heavy. It also was served with broccoli, lettuce, and jalapenos, and had a delicious spicy sauce that I spooned over it and the rice. The Lemongrass "Chicken" Deluxe was my favorite of the two, with the soy protein cooked to a nice crisp with a pleasant chew as well, as if you really were eating chicken. My only minor critique was that the dishes were not as spicy as I was expecting (both were marked as being spicy), but the chili sauce on the table more than made up for the slight lack of spice. I will be back for more lunches!
100% Italian products and cooks. Good Italian restaurant, with rich food and good products at a reasonable price for Los Angeles. The bad... It is small and noisy, very uncomfortable with the waiters always passing around you and with the tables very very close together (must book).
5+ Other Than Noise: A quick ride from our downtown hotel took us to this converted monastery. From the door opener to the sommelier who was active around the room, service gets a Jim's Gem.💍. Our waiter and his team (water, bus, wine) were amazing with full explanations and timely moves without being overbearing. In side we sat in the covered courtyard (still cool outside) on comfortable couch chairs made to linger on. Other choices were thick cushioned chairs, bar stools and large tables at the fireplace. The high ceiling with tent cover made for tough listening, but everything else about the modern decor in the old courtyard was great. For the food, after our complimentary mixed fruit apertif, I opted for the avocado salad, a possible meal in itself with a smoky dressing ofsmoked bacon, country little gems, buttermilk blue cheese and vinaigrette. Amazing course one from a menu that is marked so you don't over order. (a 4 column menu each with dots from one to four. Any combo up to 4 is super supper!).For yy next two dot choice, I opted for Lamb Belly (socca, charred eggplant, pickled walnut, mint). I discussed a favorite comfort item vs this more California adventure and at the server's reco and detailed explanation of each, took the plunge and experienced a hailstorm of tastes! A Jim's Gem💍for this succulent dish paired with the sommelier's recommendation of a half bottle of red Cote de Rhone My wife enjoyed her adventure choice too. (Rack of Red Wattle Pork: fruit mostarda, taleggio polenta, arugula, hazelnuts). My shared bites also said "wow". We capped the night going slightly over our 4 pt average wiith a shared "adventure" desert (Yuzu Bavarois: sesame praline, muscat grapes, matcha ice cream) recommended and explained by the server.) Again a happy wow. Other than the noise, -1/4) this was more than a 5 star experience. A great meal to conclude our visit to LA. This gem is easily found
You.must.eat.here. First, let’s get this out of the way. If you are looking for a romantic and intimate place, you will have to go elsewhere. This place is LOUD. With crowded seating, I was a part of three different conservations and it wasn’t pleasant. I’d recommend sitting at the end of the bar to minimize the noise pollution. And the drinks. If you are looking for stellar mixologist-inventions, this again, is not your place. Ok. Now that’s out of the way. I’ll say it again. EAT. HERE. We had the dried porcini donuts, chicken liver banh mi, the aged beef wonton, tonnarelli sea urchin (with their in-house made gluten free pasta) and the steak. It was all exceptional (minus the pasta which was good but not exceptional). This is my most memorable meal all year, by far. What sticks out to me is that everything was seasoned perfectly and the flavors were pleasantly vibrant. The two things that REALLY stuck out were the donuts and banh mi. They both were extraordinary and are two small bite plates that you should definitely order. I am looking forward to returning again and again.
100 year celebrations worth a visit We stumbled on this hidden gem while out walking. Celebrating its 100th year it is a fabulous Mexican restaurant. Shared a mixed platter and ceasar salad at lunch with their famous margriettas . While I actually had 2 margrietta....both great. Older traditional atmosphere and experienced server . Sounds like the ownership is very community driven and charitable by the 100 yr celebrations . We'll done.
2:15 pm lunch on a Wednesday in July. It’s a quiet time. We sat at a 2 top by the window that was not very comfortable. Peppers on the on the plancha were excellent. Wild salmon was delicious. It seems the lunch menu was much smaller then the sample, but it could be the time of year or day of the week. The wine list was decent with several .375 to choose from. It’s a decent spot with a good location and history. Not memorable…
3rd time Amazing, fresh, Oaxacan. Get there by mid morning or ypu will wait to get in. Live music at times, big TV for games.

The food was excellent, which makes this review disappointing to write. I genuinely enjoyed the meal and would have rated the restaurant five star based on the food alone. Unfortunately, my experience with the service left me feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable. At the end of the meal, a friend and I were both attempting to pay the bill. I understood that the server was trying to honor my friend's request to cover the meal, and that itself was not an issue. However, during the interaction, the server became unusually firm and then loudly said, "Don't touch me," when I tried to hand over my card. Touching her was absolutely not my intention. If she misunderstood my actions or felt uncomfortable for any reason, I would sincerely apologize for that. However, I don't feel it was necessary to raise her voice in front of the entire restaurant. The comment was loud enough that people throughout the restaurant turned and looked. I was embarrassed and caught completely off guard by the tone and volume used. I did not argue or create a scene because I did not want to disrupt the experience for my friends. I later spoke with another staff member, who apologized, but I wanted management to be aware of the situation because I do not believe guests or anyone should be addressed in that manner. After leaving, I called the restaurant in an attempt to provide this feedback directly to management. Unfortunately, I was unable to connect with the owner or a manager, so I am leaving this review instead. Again, the food was wonderful, and this review is not about the quality of the food. It is solely about an interaction that I felt was unnecessarily harsh and humiliating. I hope management takes this feedback seriously so that other guests do not have a similar experience.

Delicious! This was a short walk from our hotel (the Kimpton on Wilshire). The food was very good, the service was excellent, the prices were very reasonable. It's a little noisy (I'm sensitive to that because of mild hearing loss). But well worth it.

Fun Dinner! We enjoyed our time at Miceli’s Hollywood recently. The interior is beautiful and interesting. The server was very pleasant, accommodating, and had lovely singing voice. The piano player was fantastic and the live music during dinner truly made the experience. The food was very good. We both enjoyed our appetizer and dinners. Was it the best in town? Probably not but the overall experience was memorable.
